Nobel Peace Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus at at University of California at San Diego 2016

SAN DIEGO, USA 12th June 2016: Nobel Peace Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus has urged American graduates at University of California at San Diego to use their innate creative power to do more than just getting a job. He said this while talking to them as the the keynote speaker at the all-university commencement (convocation) ceremony at UC San Diego on Saturday, 11 June 2016. He told more than 10,000 graduates, present at the commencement, that running after job can be referred as “the tyranny of employment” which kills creativity and is based on an artificial economic system.

University of California San Diego conducted its first all-campus combined convocation ceremony in 16 years. More than 10,000 students received their certificates at the convocation ceremony. After the all-campus graduation, individual colleges held ceremonies later.

While speaking at the ceremony, Chancellor Pradeep Khosla said, “We are confident the University of California San Diego class of 2016 will have a positive impact on our world”.“Our students and alumni are courageous and inventive, they push boundaries and challenge expectations, much like our convocation speaker for the all-campus convocation, Muhammad Yunus,”

Professor Yunus urged the fresh graduates to do more than just take care of themselves. “There’s a wide world waiting for you. The power that you have inside of you is unlimited. Even if you want to make use of it just for yourself, you only use a fraction of it. So why not  you take care of yourself, and at the same time take care of the world?” Yunus said he believes young people are looking for something meaningful to do, but often can’t find it.

Before his convocation speech Professor Yunus was awarded the Chancellor's Medal, eleventh such person to receive it from the University since it was established in 1960.
