Social Business – Thoughts of Professor Yunus.
Social Business is very new concept being added to the social sciences and business-economics of the world that has been introduced by Professor Yunus, novel laureate, of Bangladesh. The objective of this concept is primarily to change the economical situation of a society/country with the perspective of alleviating poverty by fulfilling or improving the basic needs of the marginal people. In view of achieving this objective, Social Business is a driven-wheel that might be a different way of conducting or managing business from the conventional concept of Business Management. The conventional business is continuously looking for obtaining more profit by investing less capital which eventually develops individual or collective ownership for a few persons or families in general. On the other hand “in a social business, the investors/owners can gradually recoup the money invested, but cannot take any dividend beyond that point. Purpose ...

I have been working the last 3 years towards eventually opening my own beading store. I started with an initial loan from my daughter and her husband of $600, which I have paid back. I bought the beads and display materials I needed to start making and selling jewelry. What I do is every penny I make I re-invest back into my business. I am very knowledgable about my pieces, the gems/jewels/stones used, etc. My goal is to open a full store with a learning center within it to teach people how to create their own pieces using the many mediums I already know how to use. I would also bring in people who know mediums I am not so familiar with. I am currently already building a clientele for my beads through the shows I do.

The first year I made $600. The second year I made $3700. This year I have already passed last years sales and still have the remainder of the year to go.

I currently have an opportunity to open a kiask in the base mall but would need a loan to bring in...

1. Workers are paid wages and salaries, just like any other businesses. The non payment of dividends refers to the profits that the business makes. Those profits are not withdrawn from the business, but is instead retained in the business for expansion of products and services.

2. There are many sources of investors. And it is not true that people will not invest if they feel that they will not profit from it. If it was true, then how do you explain the billions that people give away to charity? In a social business set up, investors will get back their investment, but after that they will not receive any further dividends from the business. This is because all further profits are retained in the business for expansion and improvements.

I have a few questions but I thought I shoot just 2 for now.

1) How is the wage for staff working/setting up a social business allocated than?

2) If investors are told that theirs is a non-dividend non-profit being paid to them, how do we really seek out potential private/corporate investors?

I am setting up a social business in the USA, in the State of Virginia. There is no designation at this time so I am beginning with one partner as an LLC. The social goal is extremely large, and I could use some help refining it and making it manageable. Is there any one I could e-mail with on your staff? Or anyone you would recommend I speak with closer to where I live?
Thank you,
Jeanne Catherine
